Pirates has left me in a peculiar frame of mind. I went out with two friends and it was not what I was expecting. I liked it, I will give it that much, but it is not a complete movie, instead I have decided that I like Pirates 5 (because 2 plus 3 is 5, and there are no two movies instead one 6 hour epic!) The characters proved themselves and overcame the shadows from the second movie. I think the ending though is not very Disney-ish.

On another note it’s funny to me that epic movies with long journeys with good triumphing over evil make me sad. There is something in them that I find tragic. I know that is a funny notion, but think about it. What makes the journey and what makes it worth it? In the end it comes down to triumphing over perils. But along the way there are many things that get lost. There are the people and friends that die or are left behind, they have no place in the future with the main cast. There are the problems that could not be over come, but had to sell parts of themselves for the greater good. Those pieces remain apart; once something is severed it cannot be put back. Then there is what is usually seen as personal growth. However this means changing as a person. The person you once were is no longer there; instead an entirely new person is left. This person is less naïve, they have lost their innocence and ignorance. They now understand the cruelty of the world and people. I think that in and of itself is cruel. Not all people are better once they understand the world. Plus being the good person the journey is never really over, there is always more responsibility, no person can go back to how they were before. The good must step forward and take charge, and do things no one else wants to or can do. They become just rulers, kings rebuilding nations, the person watching another couple live happily ever after. Doing the right thing so often leaves that person alone. And the last tragic element of epics is that there is always those things that people just cannot control. These are the forces that cause pain, and the people can do nothing and have done nothing to warrant it.
To me epics are a great triumph and inspirational, they make me believe that there is still good in people. But as a good person I see that there is a huge toll taking on those that make it so. There is a price to pay, and there is no such thing as happily ever after.
